Tax Freedom Day

The idea of a 100% tax on income is not something one would like to think about and currently is not practiced. However, according to the Liberal Institute a taxation like this would end on May 29th this year and this day we call the day of tax freedom.

Until this date the whole of a citizen’s wage would pass to the state and on the other hand for all the days following the wage wouldn’t be taxed at all. This day shows that for this year, Czechs will have worked 149 days for the state, which is quite an improvement considering that since 2000, when this was first monitored, it is the shortest period yet. For comparison, last year the day of tax freedom was June 2nd and thus people worked for the state for 153 days.

As the Liberal Institute informs us, this shortening of the period happened mainly thanks to economic growth. At the same time, they warn us that this doesn’t mean the same thing will happen next year because the current profit is created largely by artificially increased demand thanks to cheap loans.

As a matter of interest, we would like to mention the situation in other EU member states. The earliest date of tax freedom day is happening in Ireland on April 20th and the latest in Finland on July 28th.
